Daljit Doogal Discusses Foley’s Strategic Growth and Big Law Expansion Trends in Emerging Legal Markets
Foley & Lardner LLP Chairman and CEO Daljit Doogal is quoted in The American Lawyer article, “Big Fish, Small Ponds: How Big Law Is Slowly Infiltrating Emerging Markets,” offering insight on Foley’s continued national growth and Big Law expansion trends, particularly in developing legal markets such as Salt Lake City and Detroit.
Discussing Foley’s entrance into Salt Lake City in 2021 and rapid growth since, Doogal said the office opening paralleled the firm’s intentional growth in other markets. “We’ve got significant areas in health care, life sciences, and technology,” he commented. “Investors are in [those markets] from San Francisco and Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas, and Salt Lake City. That’s where the growth in industry is happening. It’s an area where you’re seeing a lot of development,” he added.
When asked about competition for legal talent across markets, Doogal said that “predictably, it’s also easier to compete for legal talent in places such as Detroit than New York.” He continued to say that “in New York City, every Am Law 100 firm is there,” but “in Detroit, it’s like two or three. It’s just a different animal.”
