Foley & Lardner LLP Steven Vazquez is featured in Law.com’s “How I Made It” Q&A series.
In the article, ‘“Leave the Firm in a Better Place Than You Found It,’ Says Steve Vazquez of Foley & Lardner,” Vazquez, who is chair of Foley’s national Business Law Department, discusses his career, path to leadership, and the importance of culture and core values.
When asked to describe the skills required to be an effective leader within the firm, Vazquez said the role is “one of servant leadership.” He emphasized that effective leaders are “great communicators and motivators, have a positive attitude, are fair, are capable of making and defending uncomfortable decisions, have a strong grasp of the business of law, and care more about the impact they have on the team and the firm than themselves.”
Vazquez commented on how Foley’s Business Law Department’s strategic goals tie into the firm’s greater vision, noting how the firm does not follow a “grow at any cost” mentality and instead places focus on strategic lateral hiring that enhances the firm’s service offerings in a particular practice, sector, or subject matter.
“A key priority of the firm is diversifying our full-service national platform and sectors of the economy where we have significant strengths – energy, health care and life sciences, innovative technology, and manufacturing,” he explained. “Foley has a long history of being a trusted counsel for some of the most prominent companies in the country in these four key sectors. But just as importantly, as we continue to grow and execute our strategy, we prioritize preserving our culture, which focuses on our people and clients.”
“The strength and success of a law firm require the inclusion of all people who bring different insights and experiences,” Vazquez said, emphasizing the importance of culture and diversity to business success. “We work together as a team and focus on promoting diversity in all we do—not only through hiring new talent but also through leadership training, development, promotion, education, and client engagement.”
When asked what advice he would share with those looking to step into practice leadership, Vazquez suggested they be sure they are seeking the role for the right reasons.
“Ultimately, your objective should be to leave the firm in a better place than you found it and to positively impact the lawyers and professional staff with whom you interact,” he added.
