Overly Discusses Stalled Congressional Action on Cybersecurity on The CyberWire Podcast
Partner Michael Overly appeared as a guest on The CyberWire Daily Podcast and discussed how to make cyber security a national priority. Recently a Democratic congressman placed a hold on the State Department’s plans to establish a bureau of cyberspace securities and emerging technologies. Overly noted that plans for a cybersecurity agency have languished for two years, despite consensus on its importance. However, there is a lack of consensus in Congress over what should be the agency’s focus.
“I think both sides of the aisle would agree that getting sort of a uniform approach to these many issues that comprise cybersecurity, the digital economy, etcetera are all good. The problem is how to make that happen. The proposed new organization would have, as I understand it, 80 employees with only about a $28 million budget. That’s not a lot of money to fundamentally impact online activity,” Overly said.
