KDAF CW33 featured Gardere’s 24th Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Final Competition held at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas. Lyriq Turner, a fifth-grade student from Charles Rice Learning Center, took first place in the competition.
Eight fourth- and fifth-grade students competed at the Dallas finals event and presented original speeches answering the question: “What would Dr. King say in his campaign speech if he were running for president this year?”
“My fellow Americans, we have come a mighty, mighty long way. Yet, we still have some hills to climb and some mountains to cross,” said Za’Kiah Bell, a fifth-grade student from J.P. Starks Math, Science and Tech Vanguard, speaking from Dr. King’s point of view. “Together, I think the journey is possible and within our reach.”
