Foley announced today that Charles Tabb has joined the firm’s Bankruptcy & Business Reorganizations Practice as of counsel in its Chicago office.
Tabb brings considerable experience to Foley through his 30 years on the faculty of the University of Illinois College of Law as one of the nation’s leading bankruptcy scholars, where he holds an endowed chair and specializes in bankruptcy, contracts and commercial law. Tabb also teaches transnational bankruptcy law at Católica Global School of Law, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Lisbon, Portugal, as a member of the global law faculty. He has taught in Shanghai, China, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Tillburg, the Netherlands, and has been a visiting scholar at Cambridge University. Before joining the University of Illinois, he practiced bankruptcy and commercial law in Dallas, where his cases included the Braniff Airways and Continental Airlines Chapter 11 reorganizations.

In 2002, Tabb advised the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China on the reform of the Chinese bankruptcy law, which went into effect in June 2007. He was appointed by former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar as a commissioner for the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, and served from 1997 to 2001. Prior to that, he was appointed by Chief Justice William Rehnquist to the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure of the Judicial Conference of the United States.
Tabb has written extensively on bankruptcy law, as author of seven books and dozens of articles and chapters on the topic. Currently, he is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, where he is a member of the Board of Regents, and a member of the American Law Institute.
