Amar Thakur Brings Extensive IP Litigation Experience and Innovative Contributions to the Development of Alternative Fee Strategies for Patent Litigation; Firm has Added More Than 30 Lateral Partners During 2008 and 2009.
Foley announced today that Amar Thakur has joined the firm as a partner in the San Diego and Del Mar offices working with the Intellectual Property Department in the IP Litigation Practice Group. Thakur was previously co-chair of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP’s Intellectual Property Practice Group.
Thakur’s practice is devoted to intellectual property litigation and technology transactions matters. His litigation experience includes representation of large technology companies in telecommunications/VOIP, medical devices, software and semiconductors in patent, trademark and commercial disputes. He has appeared before the federal courts throughout California, Arizona, New York, Texas, Virginia and the International Trade Commission.
His substantial experience in technology transactional and licensing matters includes acquisition and protection of intellectual property. His practice focuses on the development and enforcement of patent portfolios, as well as creating partnerships between IP clients and large private equity firms and other investors who can help to grow promising IP portfolios. He is considered a pioneer in the development of new alternative fee strategies for patent litigation.
With Thakur’s arrival, Foley has added more than 30 lateral partners during 2008 and 2009, including nine IP litigation partners who have joined the firm in San Diego, New York and Boston.
“Amar is a much sought after patent litigator, who has represented numerous clients in California, Delaware, New York and Virginia as lead counsel in recent years,” said Stephen Maebius, chair of Foley’s Intellectual Property Department.
“He brings to Foley a sizeable portfolio of work, including the Mformation v. Research In Motion patent case pending in the Northern District of California and the Nextec v. Brookwood Companies patent case pending in the Southern District of New York in addition to numerous non-litigation matters and additional patent suits in the analysis stage.”
“What makes Amar uniquely positioned to succeed are his high-level and substantial relationships with several private equity firms and investors, who are able to form partnerships with Amar’s IP clients to further expand and develop their patent portfolios,” Maebius continued.
“Amar has a well-deserved national reputation for excellence,” added Van Tengberg, managing partner of Foley’s San Diego and Del Mar offices. “His arrival comes a year after David Kleinfeld, Kurt Kjelland, and their outstanding patent litigation team joined our firm in San Diego. The addition of Amar builds on the substantial growth and positive momentum in the development of our California presence and international intellectual property practice.”
Thakur explained his decision to join Foley as follows: “Both internationally and in Southern California, Foley has one of the preeminent intellectual property litigation practices. This uniquely rich platform represents a tremendous opportunity to further grow my practice.”
Thakur frequently writes and speaks about legal issues related to intellectual property and technology transactions. He participates on panels on a regular basis for American Corporate Counsel Association events and is a guest lecturer at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Irvine.
