Community Cancer Center Chosen For Flexible Business Practice Model.
Foley announced today that The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is the recipient of the Foley & Lardner LLP Cancer Center Innovator Award. The award was announced at the firm’s Cancer Center Business Summit.
Foley created the award to honor the organization that best distinguished itself as an innovator in the business of cancer care. The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders was chosen for its unique approach of providing comprehensive cancer care from a community setting while coordinating its business operations with local resources in cancer care delivery. For example, the Center organized a land lease deal with the City to have deeply discounted land for the Center and made a joint ownership deal with a local hospital for a capital intensive piece of medical equipment, the cyberknife.
“Foley is proud to present the Cancer Center Innovator Award to The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders for its approach to providing comprehensive cancer care services in a private, community structure,” said Michael Blau, chair of the firm’s Health Care Venture Practice. “The Center’s innovative method of doing business allows its practitioners to provide integrated care for the whole patient through mutually beneficial joint ventures with other stakeholders and cancer care providers.”
A committee of 13 Cancer Center Business Summit hosts and advisers selected The Center from surveys submitted by academic medical centers, non-profit and for-profit community hospitals, medical group practices and other cancer care institutions across the nation. The survey aimed to identify industry trends associated with the delivery of cancer care as well as business models designed to position cancer centers for future success.
The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is a community cancer center that focuses on a patient’s entire life—physical, emotional, and spiritual. The Center’s medical professionals provide cancer patients with diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care from six clinics in Texas. For more information, visit www.texascancercare.com.
Honorable Mentions also were presented to UPMC Cancer Centers (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) in the category of Academic Medical Centers and Cedars-Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute in Los Angeles in the category of Community Hospitals.
The Cancer Center Business Summit is being held at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago on Thursday, October 25 and Friday, October 26 and is co-hosted by Foley, New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology, California Cancer Care and Oncology Metrics.
