Foley announced today that Heidi A. Sorensen has joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as a member of the Health Care Industry Team.
“The addition of Heidi is the next step in the firm’s strategic plan to bolster the firm’s resources and reputation in the health care compliance and enforcement arena, as well as enhance its overall presence in Washington, D.C.,” said J. Mark Waxman, chair of the firm’s Health Care Industry Team. “Heidi’s experience and recognition as an expert in health care fraud and abuse and compliance counseling will further establish and expand the depth of the firm’s national health care practice.”
Sorensen will focus her practice on health care fraud and abuse and compliance counseling. She comes to Foley after a distinguished career with the Office of Counsel to the Inspector General (OIG), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She began her career with the OIG in January of 2000, and most recently served as Chief of the Administrative and Civil Remedies Branch, during which she supervised a 45-person team that covers a broad spectrum of government enforcement activity, including Medicare and Medicaid issues.
Sorensen coordinated the Physicians at Teaching Hospitals National Project and the OIG Provider Self Disclosure Protocol. She also has experience working with medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers and corporate health care providers in matters involving potential criminal plea agreements, federal health care program exclusions and civil monetary penalties.
Prior to joining the OIG, Sorenson was in private practice for six years with Miller & Chevalier, Chartered. During this period, she litigated complex health care and government contracts cases including False Claims Act, Civil RICO and Federal Employee Health Benefits Act (FEHBA) matters. With this background, she is able to offer insight into the Government’s priorities, processes and paths to resolution of complex matters involving compliance, including OIG corporate integrity agreements, and enforcement.
