John W. Caven, Jr. is a retired partner with Foley & Lardner LLP where he was a member of the firm’s Construction Practice. He was principally involved in representation of construction industry clients and for years served as counsel for the Greater Florida Chapter of the Associated General Contractors and its board, which embraces membership from a large percentage of Florida’s counties.
John has counseled as to and litigated construction issues for owners and general contractors for more than 20 years. His cases reflect a continuous involvement in virtually every aspect of construction-related matters, including failed buildings, production issues in chemical manufacturing plants, incomplete or improper construction, contract negotiation, contract interpretation and delay disputes.
John’s experience as a federal prosecutor serves well his representation of clients in federal, as well as state courts, and before arbitration panels and the various United States boards of contract appeals. His training and certification as a Florida certified mediator, and his years of handling disputes, assist him in quickly recognizing and dealing with pivotal issues in disputes.

John is a member of the Jacksonville, Federal and American Bar Associations, as well as the Association of the United States Board of Contract Appeals. He is admitted to practice in the State of Florida, the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Claims Court, and the United States Supreme Court, and is listed in America’s Leading Attorneys as a leading Florida attorney. He also enjoys an AV rating, the highest afforded attorneys by Martindale Hubbell.

Pro Bono
John has lectured and written with regard to construction law and litigation matters. He has served as a guest lecturer at the Engineering College of the University of Florida. For years he has conducted courses, pro bono, for construction industry supervisory training, covering such topics as principles of construction law, record keeping and dispute resolution.
