Associate General Counsel

Joseph D. Edmondson, Jr. is associate general counsel with Foley & Lardner, LLP.  In his role as associate general counsel, Joe advises Foley and its lawyers with respect to a wide variety of compliance, ethics, professional responsibility, and litigation issues.

Joe was previously a practicing attorney with Foley for over three decades, including over 20 years as a partner in Foley’s Litigation Department. His experience includes securities litigation, government and regulatory investigations and enforcement proceedings, professional liability defense and counseling, and general commercial litigation. He had represented clients in well over 100 arbitrations and mediations, in the areas of securities, commercial and professional liability. As associate general counsel, Joe no longer is a regular service provider to external clients, except in pro bono matters.

Prior to taking on this role, Joe served as a professional responsibility partner within Foley for a decade, and has also served as a member of the Firm’s audit letter, recruiting, and Washington, DC pro bono committees.

Community Engagement

Joe has served as a member of the board of directors of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs for nearly a decade, and has been a regular volunteer and contributor to Committee pro bono matters over his entire career. He also serves as a member of the board of directors of Gifts for the Homeless, Inc. (www.gfth.org), and serves as its vice president for used clothing, having chaired its annual city-wide law firm used clothing drive for the past fifteen years and currently.

Education

Joe received both his law and undergraduate degrees from the George Washington University (B.A., magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa,1988; J.D., with honors,1991). He served as an associate editor of the George Washington Journal of International Law and Economics.

Admissions

Joseph is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia before the United States District Courts for the District of Maryland and the District of Columbia, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and District of Columbia Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court.
