About Strategies for Independent Community Hospitals to Remain Viable Web Conference Series
The health care industry is clearly in a time of significant change, leading some community hospitals to pursue acquisitions, consolidations, or mergers to stay viable. For community hospitals desiring to remain independent, there are a number of issues to consider. What is the best choice regarding consistency with fiduciary obligations? What are the feasible alternatives and strategies for achieving the best outcome for the community? What tools are available to assist in the decision-making process? How does the hospital board know when it has exhausted all available options before deciding to give up the hospital’s independence?
These questions are exceedingly important in this era of increased activism by antitrust enforcement agencies, which have become skeptical of claims of merger efficiencies and projected cost reductions from consolidations. To what extent is acquisition or consolidation necessary to achieve these goals? Can they be achieved, particularly in more concentrated markets, through affiliation and other arrangements that do not raise the specter of increased pricing power?
The Strategies for Independent Community Hospitals to Remain Viable Web Conference Series, presented by Foley’s Health Care Industry Team, is a four-part series featuring a diverse faculty of thought leaders and community hospital case studies to more closely examine these issues.
