Foley proudly hosted a breakfast seminar addressing the timely topic, “Raising Real Estate Equity.” The seminar, which was offered in Foley’s Boston and Chicago offices, is appropriate for all real estate finance and securities professionals concerned with real estate capital market strategies, including real estate owners/developers, senior and subordinate lenders, real estate acquisition and underwriting professionals, commercial real estate and mortgage brokers, licensed securities broker-dealers, and registered representatives and financial advisors.
The seminar addressed such topics as:
- The blurring of the line between debt and equity, known as “dequity”
- Leverage in the real estate capital markets
- Institutional equity sources, including opportunity funds, hedge funds, and joint venture partners
- Raising a real estate equity or co-investment fund: who, how, and how much
- Using the new securities retail distribution channel created by the tenant-in-common (TIC) industry to raise low-cost equity
- Equity structures for maximizing opportunities for attractive senior debt terms
- Raising real estate equity offshore
The seminar was moderated by Foley Real Estate Partner Stephen I. Burr, chair of the firm’s syndicated Real Estate Practice and nationally recognized for his knowledge on the subject of real estate equity structures. Panelists included Foley attorneys Kenneth R. Appleby, addressing tax issues, David W. Kantaros, discussing fund formation, and Sven Riethmueller, covering foreign investors. They were joined by senior representatives of key participants in the real estate capital markets.
