Over the past quarter century, China has experienced phenomenal economic growth and an unprecedented accumulation of wealth from its trade surplus with other countries. These changes, coupled with the Chinese government’s commitment to support globalization through the adoption of new political and financial policies, have made China attractive as the land of opportunities for foreign investors and have also fueled China’s desire to step up its investment s globally, including in the U.S.
According to Chinese state media, China’s direct investments overseas rose 6.5% in 2009 to $43.3 billion and could jump to $60 billion in 2010. The goal of this program is to provide a brief overview of current trends in cross-border transactions between the U.S. and greater China. Key topics will include a discussion of the current legal and business environment, basic investment issues, regulatory issues, major types of disputes involved in cross border transactions with greater China.
