Spring 2023 JIPA Seminar Series: U.S. Intellectual Property Law Update
Foley is pleased to once again partner with the Japan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA), the country’s largest private organization concerned with intellectual property rights, to present its members with a biannual update on intellectual property developments in the United States. Organized by Foley’s Tokyo Office Managing Partner Etsuo Doi, the Spring 2023 JIPA Seminar Series aims to inform Japanese innovators and entrepreneurs with a global reach on the U.S. patent landscape over the second half of 2022.
The first of two webinars in the Spring 2023 series will be presented on Thursday, May 18, by Partners Steve Maebius and Kristel Schorr, both members of the firm’s Chemical, Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Practice. Steve and Kristel will provide JIPA members with a patent counseling update, including a summary of recent case law impacting claim drafting and a review of the latest U.S. Patent and Trademark Office application trends, appeal and patent term adjustment statistics, and new and expanded programs for accelerated examination, fast-track appeals, and career development.
Partner Kiri Lee Sharon, a member of the firm’s Mechanical & Electromechanical Technologies Practice, will present the second webinar session on Thursday, May 25, addressing developments in popular U.S. patent litigation jurisdictions. Kiri will guide JIPA members through various statistics on patent cases filed in key federal district courts, Abbreviated New Drug Application cases, challenges before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and ex parte appeals. Additionally, she will summarize noteworthy cases involving judicial correction and patent eligibility, and preview cases to watch with decisions pending in 2023.
