Berman, Cain, and Mason Featured in Article About Legal Services for Start-Ups
Partner Myles D. Berman, Partner Christopher C. Cain, and Senior Counsel Galen R. Mason were featured in an April 27, 2013 Chicago Daily Law Bulletin article titled, “Lawyers Courting Startups.” The article discussed the challenges that traditional law firms can face when representing cutting-edge start-ups, and highlighted how Foley is bucking that trend through our relationship with Catapult Chicago, a collaborative technology start-up community.
Mason is quoted in the article, noting that he disagrees with the view that a large law firm is not the most efficient legal counsel for a start-up company. Working with a bigger firm lets clients get quick answers on issues in any area of the law and can be used by start-ups as a 1,000-person network of well-connected professionals, he said.
In addition to being a founding sponsor of Catapult, Foley lawyers provide counsel across diverse practice areas and free office hours for Catapult’s resident companies. Catapult companies also have access to Foley’s business network and, if requested, availability of the firm’s venture fund — a unique offering in Chicago that the firm imported from its coastal offices.
Berman also is quoted, noting that the firm’s relationship with and investment in Catapult was the right choice. “We see it almost as pure opportunity,” he said. “[W]e think it’s the right space to be in in 2013.”
