Foley Represents University of Florida Health in Acquisition of Scripps Florida
Foley & Lardner LLP represented the University of Florida Health in its acquisition of the Florida-based operations of The Scripps Research Institute, an independent, non-profit biomedical research and drug discovery institute.
Both the University of Florida Health and Scripps hold longstanding reputations as institutions with top-tier biomedical and clinical expertise and exceptional research capabilities. This transaction helps create a facility that allows for enhanced biomedical patient outcomes around the globe and positions the University of Florida and the University of Florida Health as premier research institutions in the United States. As of April 2, 2022, the Scripps Research campus, located in Jupiter, Florida, has been integrated with and is now part of the University of Florida Health’s academic health center under the new combined name of UF Scripps Biomedical Research.
The integrated organization is currently working to bring additional biomedical scientists to its faculty and add those with particular expertise in artificial intelligence and computational biology. The Florida branch of the Skaggs Graduate School of Chemical and Biological Sciences will also continue to operate as part of the Scripps Research graduate program with further support from the University of Florida Health, a continuation of Scripps’ commitment to training the next generation of scientific researchers.
Additionally, UF Scripps Biomedical Research will launch a new endeavor, the Postbaccalaureate Research and Education Program (PREP), a yearlong immersive research experience for recent college graduates providing unparalleled academic and laboratory skills that will directly apply to future work in research-focused Ph.D. programs.
The Foley deal team was led by Partner Roger Strode and included Partners Pamela Brown, Monica Chmielewski, Jason Kohout, Steven Millendorf, Kristel Schorr, Senior Counsel Kinal Patel, and Associates Brooke Bahlinger and Stephanie Schwartz.
