Foley & Lardner Public Affairs Director Dennis Cardoza discussed key energy policy focuses for the new year in the Law360 article, “Top 5 Energy Policy Areas To Watch In 2025.”
With the incoming administration aiming to repeal parts or all of the Inflation Reduction Act, Cardoza noted that the former approach is the most likely. “It will be done on a case-by-case basis, more likely than anything wholesale, and there will be a strong pushback from red-state Republicans where those investments have already taken place and where they’ve been announced in their communities,” explained Cardoza, who co-chairs Foley’s Federal Public Affairs Practice.
Another expected shift under the new administration is the expansion of oil and gas development on federal lands and in federal waters. “I take the president-elect at his word, that he’s going to promote drilling,” Cardoza said.
Cardoza added that though the incoming Republican-controlled Congress will likely favor more traditional energy initiatives, that does not mean lawmakers will cast aside other categories of energy projects.
“I expect transmission to be a high priority despite their view that it should be an ‘all of the above’ strategy,” Cardoza added. “I think they understand that a healthy economy is going to need a lot of generation capacity.”
