Gregory Husisian on Tariff Exemptions – 'It's like a safety valve'
Foley & Lardner LLP partner Gregory Husisian described how companies expected to be impacted by U.S. tariffs are eyeing possible exclusions from the duties in the Bloomberg Law article, “Trump Tariff Exemptions Uncertain as Companies Seek Safety Valve.”
“The expectation is that when you have broad-based tariffs against such important trading partners, that at some point you need to have a meaningful exclusion process,” explained Husisian, who is co-chair of Foley’s International Trade and National Security Practice. “It’s like a safety valve to not bring critical economic activity to a grinding halt.”
Husisian added that possible arguments for companies seeking exemptions are that tariffs will disproportionately impact poorer Americans, those who live in rural areas, or will present national security concerns.
